The Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in Journalism and Mass Communication is a four-year degree programme designed for students seeking to acquire a high level of knowledge in examining and analysing any form of mass media. It is an interdisciplinary course study, which open doors to the spectrum of careers, from advertising and broadcasting to public relations, journalism and publishing. Students acquire the skill to examine how mass media works to affect society, and it impacts as the fourth arm of government for socio-economic development in Sierra Leone and Africa as a whole. The framework design of the program grant students an extra opportunity to progress in pursuing a degree in Law as an additional career interest.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

In other to attain a Bachelor of Science (Honors) degree in Journalism and Mass
Communication, students are required to complete a hundred and twenty (120) credit hours.
Which consists of eight (8) Foundational Courses, made-up of English Oral and Writing
skills of six (6) credit hours, General Education of nine (9) credit hours, and Basic computer
studies of nine (9) credit hours, summing up to twenty-four (24) credit hours requirement,
and in addition to (32) departmental courses holding a ninety-six (96) credit hours as a
requirement to graduate as honours in BSc. Degree in Journalism and Mass
Communication.

Eligibility criteria for admission

  1. The students holding General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) ‘O’ Level, must have five (5) credit passes including English and Mathematics.
  2. If the students hold West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), then the candidates must have credit in six (6) subjects and three of these six subjects must be core subjects including English language .

COURSE CREDITS TRANSFER POLICY

Central University accept credit transfers from accredited and recognized colleges or Universities on a case-by-case basis. However, credit transfer from such colleges and universities cannot exceed sixty (60) credit hours, relying on courses that are different from departmental courses yet relevant to the field of study, which may be considered for transfer. Therefore, students with credit transfer requests will be required to contact the office of the Registrar to establish the procedure in fulfilling such requirements at the departmental or faculty level.
